Principal Bustillo wrote, “…our school community stands on the shoulders of the rich history of different cultural and racial groups who fought tirelessly to ensure that BMPV remained a school that was open, welcoming, inclusive, and supported in their ability to serve the entire community.” We were excited to run a program that documented their shared history, told the entire story of BMPV, and amplified the voices within the school’s unique community!

Bruce-Monroe Elementary School at Park View
Our partnership began in the fall of 2023 with students in 4th grade. In an afterschool club setting, our program empowered students to research the history of their school and uncover the stories of their surrounding community. They interviewed long-time residents and BMPV teachers, principals, staff, and alumni. Students also examined their neighborhood using a historical lens and visited the Charles Sumner School Museum and Archives. After research was complete in 2025, their bilingual exhibit (Spanish/English) was installed in the school’s main lobby. It shares the history and stories from the five schools that merged to become Bruce-Monroe Elementary at Park View.
