In her application, Ms. Celestina Lee wrote, “…as gentrification continues to displace those who have historically called the neighborhood home…we are working with intention to foster trusting relationships across difference that are rooted in mutual respect for Garrison’s history and existence as a proud Title I school.”

Guided by Ms. Kiara Social during the 2024 – 2025 school year, Garrison’s 5th grade students researched the history of their school and uncovered the stories of their community through archival research, oral history interviews, and historical neighborhood walking tours. Now completed, In their Footsteps: Garrison’s Journey of Liberation and Learning honors the history of the school as well as the historical significance of the land it sits on. Through photographs and oral history quotes, exhibit visitors experience the resilience of those who were formerly enslaved, striving to build new lives in Washington, D.C., as well as the dedication of the Garrison community who fought to preserve and invest in the school we know today. Other fascinating stories highlighted in the exhibit include the life and legacy of William Lloyd Garrison, Garrison Elementary’s award-winning double dutch team, and former Garrison educator, labor leader, civil rights activist, and suffragette Nellie Quander.
