Oyster-Adams Bilingual School

In October 2019, a group of Oyster-Adams Bilingual School students in grades 2 – 8 began their “school story” research journey. Using their pre-established after-school club, the Explorer’s Club, Mr. Mike Benson and Srta. Ana Lopez guided the students as they participated in archival research, visited archives and museums, interviewed long-time residents, and participated in neighborhood history walks.

With the onset of COVID-19 and the closure of DC Public School buildings, our project quickly switched to virtual setting in March 2020. With the support of dedicated families and staff, we were able to continue our project with club meetings over Zoom.

Now completed, Las Raíces Bilingües (the Bilingual Roots) de Oyster-Adams tells how Oyster became the bilingual school it is today. Using photographs and quotes from the students’ oral history interviews, this bilingual exhibit weaves a story that is rooted in community advocacy and activism. In partnership with the school, we hosted an exhibit reveal event in May 2022.

In 2024, we helped connect the school to Mr. Earl Williams, the first Black student at Oyster after DC public schools integrated. The school created a film about his story.
